A will-o’-the-wyke also known as a jacky-lantern or a marsh light was a species that lived in the water of the Fens and formed part of the secret commonwealth. They were luminous, Lyra Silvertongue saw a green and a red one when on the Maid of Portugal with the gyptian Giorgio Brabandt. Lyra thought the creatures were doing a weird halting, pausing, swerving dance. When a zeppelin came over and fired near the lights, they became scared. The creatures would pull people under the water of the Fens before killing them.[1]
In Holland, they were called dwaalichts and, in France, feux follets.[2]
