This scholar was a man from Will's world whose papers, after his death in Oxford, were discovered and sold at auction. These papers belonged to Lord Asriel from Lyra's world and how they ended up in the scholar's collection is unknown. Ian Beck, who recongnised their significance, bought the papers.[1]
