Will and Lyra attempt to make sense of her dreams of Roger. They clash, Will wanting to follow his father’s instructions to go to Lord Asriel and Lyra wanting to reach Roger in the land of the dead. Agent Salmakia discovers that the subtle knife has been broken. Iorek is reluctant to help them fix it and warns them against travel to the world of the dead. However, he instructs Will in the reforging of the blade and instructs him not to use it when his thoughts are divided.
Father Gomez returns to the Magisterium with news of Lyra’s escape and Father President MacPhailresolves to kill her by any means necessary.
Mrs Coulter has been taken prisoner by Asriel’s forces. He refuses to believe that Lyra is the new Eve and is resistant to her demands that their daughter needs protection. Asriel has Mrs Coulter put on trial. She admits to being a terrible mother but claims her wicked past has been justified because she has been able to save Lyra and keep her safe. The rebellion leaders agree to work with her, but Asriel warns her there will be consequences if there is any sign of duplicity.
Mrs Coulter examines the intention craft. Asriel confronts her about lying about the breaking of the knife and threatens to have her locked up again. He declares he will not longer have his forces waste time on Lyra and explains the lies his rebellion is seeking to challenge. He takes her to see the imprisoned Archangel Alarbus. Distracted as he tortures the angel, Asriel does not notice Mrs Coulter leave. She escapes in the intention craft, but not without being followed by Commander Roke as Asriel decides to let her go.
