The Enchanted Sleeper is the first episode in the third series of the TV series. It was broadcast on 5 December 2022 in the US and premiered on 18 December 2022 in the UK.
Synopsis[]
As Will searches for Lyra across worlds, Mrs. Coulter tests an unlikely new ally, while Asriel recruits for his war against the Authority.
Plot[]
For millennia, the Authority has ruled the Kingdom of Heaven and called himself the Creator, the Almighty. However, he is a pretender to those titles, and he ruled with a dark angel at his side. Those who spoke up against him were cast away. Angels now live in between worlds, waiting for an opportunity for vengeance.
Lord Asriel is preparing to launch a rebellion.
Meanwhile, Will is still searching for Lyra, but in vain. Lyra is hidden away in a house by the coast by Mrs Coulter.
Mrs. Coulter watches Lyra sleep. She tells a deaf girl, Ama, that Lyra is in fact her daughter and is asleep because a spell was cast on her. Mrs. Coulter asks Ama to help keep others away.
Will is confronted by angels but he tries to get away from them. He uses the knife to cut into a different world. The angels, Balthamos and Baruch, follow and ask him to go to Asriel. Will explains that he won’t do what they ask until he finds Lyra. The angels agree to help him find her.
Having crashed his intention craft, Asriel breaks into a prison facility to recruit Ogunwe to his rebellion, with the help of Gallivespian agents. Ogunwe is hesitant to join him. In his world, the Magisterium takes the form of the Temple, who also appear to have been severing kidnapped children from their dæmons. Asriel makes his case and Ogunwe eventually concedes on the condition that he is the leader instead of Asriel. Asriel asks to take Ogunwe to another world to show him the necessity of his rebellion and to encourage him to leave his daughter to join a bigger fight.
Cardinal MacPhail arrives in Geneva, following news of a prophecy about Lyra from the alethiometrist Fra Pavel. He believes that, if she is tempted by a serpent, she will fall and sin will triumph. He is intent on taking Lyra down to prevent this from happening. MacPhail tasks Father Gomez with leading troops to recover Lyra. Gomez also visits Fra Pavel to deliver veiled threats to speed up the identification of Lyra’s location.
Baruch tracks Lyra to a remote island in the German Ocean, where she is being held against her will by Mrs Coulter. Balthamos will take Will there whilst Baruch passes on news of Æsahættr to Asriel.
Lyra wakes from her drugged state and attempts to escape. Unaware that Ama is watching, Mrs Coulter recaptures a weakened Lyra and drugs her again, claiming its for her own protection.
In need of a boat, Will and Balthamos arrive in a town to discover Iorek Byrnison attacking locals who have taken one of his bears captive. Will challenges Iorek to a fight. When Will easily cuts a piece of Iorek’s armour with the subtle knife, the bear king forfeits. With the other bear freed, Iorek joins Will on the boat to find Lyra.
A spy-fly sent by Father Gomez discovers Lyra’s location.
