The Break is the second episode in the third series of the TV series. It was released on 5 December 2022 in the US and 18 December 2022 in the UK.
Synopsis[]
As the Magisterium closes in on Mrs. Coulter, Will tries to help Lyra to safety. Asriel's base is rocked by unexpected visitors.
Plot[]
Will thanks Balthamos for his help. Balthamos can sense angels getting closer to Lord Asriel, even across vast distances.
Lyra dreams of Roger in the land of the dead.
Asriel takes Ogunwe to see the impressive army he has amassed. One of its key figures is Queen Ruta Skadi of the Lake Lubana witch clan, who actually recommended Ogunwe to Asriel in the first place. Asriel stresses that, while the army he’s built is vast, it’s not enough to provoke the Authority. He needs more to join him.
Asriel receives word that Lyra is in trouble but is sceptical that she is really the child the prophecy concerns and does not take the threat Father President MacPhail’s forces pose seriously. He is interrupted by a fight between Baruch and Archangel Alarbus. Baruch lives long enough to pass on the news that Æsahættr has been found and that its bearer in a boy on his way to Lyra.
Alarbus, an Angel who works for the Authority, is imprisoned by Asriel who begins torturing him for information. Alarbus reveals that the new Regent intends to control Dust and make all domains bend the knee to his will. Xaphania, the angel who led the first rebellion against the Authority, is disquieted by Asriel’s single-minded and often ruthless approach.
Upon arriving at Lyra’s remote location, Will meets Ama. Mrs Coulter intercepts Will as he approaches Lyra and claims she is protecting her daughter. He leaves, perturbed and dissatisfied with her arguments.
Forces from both the Magisterium and Asriel’s troops converge on the island. Mrs Coulter has her dæmon hit her on the head with a rock. When questioned by Father Gomez, she claims Will attacked her and has taken Lyra.
Crushed by Baruch’s death and disgusted by pointless human drama, Balthamos leaves Will, who is planning to reach Lyra by cutting a window level with her location and recover her to another world. As Mrs Coulter and Gomez talk, Will wakes Lyra with a plant given to him by Ama. She knocks Father Gomez out with the same rock she used before and intercepts Will before they can leave.
Mrs Coulter has realised Will’s mother is a weakness to exploit and the knife shatters as he tries to cut a window to escape. She takes Gomez’s gun but is stung and rendered unconscious by Agent Salmakia. Will and Lyra refuse to leave with Asriel’s forces and are protected from troops by Iorek and Ama. They are followed by Salmakia into another world shortly before Asriel arrives to discover the knife-bearer gone.
