Synopsis[]
Lyra and Will try to escape from the Land of the dead; meanwhile, Asriel makes a startling discovery. The bomb goes off in the Land of the Dead but Will and Lyra survive it. However, chasms go off in several worlds.
Plot[]
Metatron resolves to end the free will Dust provides to conscious beings.
Marisa comes around, retrieves Lyra’s hair from the bomb and demands that Fra Pavel tell her of Lyra’s fate. Interpreting darkness as Lyra’s death, she uses the intention craft to return to Asriel’s fortress. An abyss has been opened, increasing the rate that Dust is lost. Asriel explores the abyss and Ruta Skadi dies when her dæmon is sucked into it. Marisa, Serafina, Ogunwe and Iorek confront Asriel for having provoked the Authority and for his lack of concern for Lyra.
Miraculously, Lyra and Will survive the bomb and continue to lead the ghosts onwards. Lee Scoresby learns that Will is the son of Jopari and offers to find him. Lyra is entranced looking into the abyss and fall from the narrow path. She is saved by a harpy, who she gifts with the name Gracious Wings in recognition. It is agreed that the ghosts will tell the harpies stories in exchange for guidance out of the land of the dead.
Marisa struggles with her grief, even trying to provoke Serafina into killing her. Eventually, she apologises to her dæmon, acknowledging his strength as they hold hands. Asriel finally realises Lyra’s brilliance when Iorek tells him of her plan to free Roger from the land of the dead. After he tells her that Lyra is still alive, Marisa realises the truth in the prophecy that Lyra will defeat death. Serafina sends Kaisa to look for Pan and Will’s dæmon.
Will reunites with his father. John expresses his pride in his son and instructs him to find his dæmon. Above all, he tells Will not to live in a world other than his own. Lyra spends some precious last moments with Roger.
Reaching the top of the path, Will cuts a window into a paradise-like world, which actually turns out to be that of the mulefa. Following an emotional goodbye, Roger is first to pass to the other side, followed by Lee and the other ghosts.
Xaphania informs Asriel and Marisa that Metatron will attack, Lyra having threatened his control.
