Tartary was a country in Lyra's world which could be divided in Central and Eastern Tartary.[1] Tartary was near Muscovy and Western Siberia.[2]
A person from Tartary was called a Tartar.[3] Tartars were rumoured to eat children.[4] Lyra described a group of East Asian tourists in Oxford in Will's world as "Tartars".[5]
There were multiple ghostly species in Tartary including the Nälkäinen - a ghost that would grab a person sleeping in their forests and never let go. There were also the Breathless Ones, half-dead warriors whose heart needed to be pumped manually by their dæmons.[4]
