The Master[]
Hi everyone, is it revealed who the Master of Jordan College is at the time when Asriel hands over Lyra. I don't think it's Dr Carne because Amy's response showed that it will be discovered in The Secret Commonwealth. Unless there is a name, I guess that means creating 'Unidentified Master of Jordan College'. NightSpeakers - My Blogs! 20:25, April 5, 2019 (UTC)
- I think that it is almost certain that is was Dr Carne who was Master at the time. Based on what John Faa says about the Master in Northern Lights (Chapter 7), we get the impression that (when handing Lyra over) Asriel made him promise to keep Mrs Coulter away from her and, after around a decade of successfully doing so, for whatever reason he has now broken that promise. Faa suggests that the Master faces threats from the Church, particularly as a result of his college's links to Asriel, and that he must have judged Lyra to be safer with Coulter than staying at Jordan. Or that Coulter was able to blackmail/threaten him. Coulter has successfully had Asriel imprisoned on Svalbard and John Faa doubts that the Master would ever have broken his promise if Asriel was free. This all makes sense only if the Master had been the Master for Lyra's entire life at Jordan. He feels responsible for her safety having watched her grow up under his protection.
