Where is it confirmed that the events of La Belle Sauvage happened in 1986? --MusicaLƎƎ (talk) 18:22, October 24, 2018 (UTC)

I took the information from the page Oxfordshire, it says this was mentioned in La Belle Sauvage, chapter 6. I will scroll through it and check to see what it says! NightSpeakers - My Blogs!! 13:27, October 25, 2018 (UTC)
Was this ever confirmed? --MusicaLƎƎ (talk) 13:51, August 20, 2019 (UTC)
This is something I've been looking at for a while, I can't remember anywhere in LBS where it says specifically in 1986. I think it's been taken from the fact that Will was born 1985/86 area from TSK in his dad's letters. Lyra was about the same age meaning she would have been born at that time (assuming timelines work like that in her world), it says at the start of the book that the book is based in February and Lyra is 6 months old meaning the events would have taken in 1986. Also we know that the last floods were in 1953 and they occured every 30 years or so. The fact that Lyra would have been 11 around 1997 further supports that. I need to check whether it was confirmed anywhere, if anyone has any clues please reply! NightSpeakers - My Blogs! 13:59, August 20, 2019 (UTC)
For that matter, what's the basis for saying that His Dark Materials takes place in 1997? Do we even know whether calendars in the two worlds line up? —Josiah Rowe (talk) 02:07, January 22, 2020 (UTC)
Almost definitely not (Lyra's world is known to have an extra day in April although perhaps a day is taken away somewhere but the years are definitely similar, we know they are in the same century. Another interesting point to raise since this conversation started, the BBC TV series showed an interview on BBC News with John Parry which took place sometime around 2006 (some kind of Navy challenge, IIRC) although the TV series has modernised the books so that shouldn't be trusted.
