Saint Barnabas was said to be an experimental theologian that lived in Palmyra in Lyra's world during the latter part of the 3rd century. He invented an apparatus that purified rare essences and fragrant oils. He became perfumer-in-chief to Queen Zenobia. The Oratory of St Barnabas the Chymist was named in his honour.[1]
