The solicitor worked at Jordan College in Lyra's world. He was notably tall and his dæmon was a kestrel. He had always been kind to Lyra Silvertongue, and taken an interest in her, but she did not know who he was until Hannah Relf identified him to her.
When Dr Carne became confused with age, the solicitor took on power of attorney. However, this was after the Master was encouraged to invest a considerable amount of money, meant to provide for Lyra, into a fund that crashed. Oakley Street believed this was linked to the Magisterium's attempt to get to Lyra and that the fund was known to be badly managed or was deliberately ruined.[1]
The new Master of Jordan College, Werner Hammond, lied to Lyra when he claimed the money was in the hands of the solicitor.[2] In fact, the solicitor had done his best to dissuade Dr Carne from investing, but the Magisterium acted before he had the legal power to prevent the investment from being made.[1]
