Peril of the Pole was a board game in Lyra's world based on the famous Rally to the Pole race held once every ten years. The boarding house, which Lee Scoresby stayed at in Novy Odense, had a copy of this game.[1]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

The game is for four to six players. Each player has a balloon token. The objective of the game is to be the last balloon in the air, i.e. the only player who has not reached the vortex at the North Pole, the last space on the board.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • A copy of the game is included with some editions of the book Once Upon a Time in the North.
  • This game is essentially a variant on games such as Pachisi or Ludo; it is however a "negative" variant, in that the winner is the last player home.
