The Oxford Canal was a canal in Lyra's world. It connected the city of Oxford with a network of canals that spanned from East Anglia to the West Midlands. It was constructed in Roman times. For many years the citizens of Oxford were suspicious of the Oxford Canal and those who worked on it, though they still relied on them for goods and raw materials. Mr Parsons was the lock-keeper on the Oxford Canal. It connected to the River Thames through Duke's Cut. Great crested grebes, a species of waterbird, lived on the canal.
