Novy Odense was a town on the island of the same name belonging to Muscovy. It was here that Lee Scoresby first met Iorek Byrnison, and also where Lee killed Pierre McConville. The houses here were mostly made of wood which was imported.

Novy Odense exported fish-oil, seal-oil and rock-oil, as well as preserved fish, skins and furs. It imported coal, salt, hardware, machinery, timber, sugar, grain, meats (frozen and preserved), coffee, wines, spirits, canvas and cordage. [1]

There was a harbour in Novy Odense, described by The "Shipping World" Year Book as 'good'. It had several quays which vessels of 17 to 18 feet could lie alongside. The channel was 19 feet deep. There was always dredging of the harbour in summer. There were sheds on the east quay, which held two anbaric cranes and sheds and rails on the west quay, which had a steam crane.[1]
