Synopsis[]
Will and Lyra journey into the Land of the Dead in search of Roger; Mrs. Coulter risks everything to save Lyra.
Plot[]
Mary Malone is introduced to the mulefa world by Atal. She begins to learn the language and discovers their symbiotic relationship with the wheel-trees, the seeds of which they use to move around.
She collects large pieces of amber from a river and, by applying oil from the wheel-tree seeds, is able to see Dust. The mulefa call Dust sraf and can see it without optical aids thanks to their relationship with the trees. Mary realises that Dust is leaving the mulefa world, and Atal confirms that both the mulefa and the trees are dying.
In the land of the dead, Lyra and Will discover cowering ghosts, pale fragments of the people they once must have been, with Roger among them. They are separated and hallucinate, taunted by voices and threatened by the harpies that keep the dead in check. Lyra is able to gather the strength to talk about her past, her stories giving them courage and making them visibly more alive. She and Will resolve to free the ghosts from their imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Mrs Coulter is still imprisoned by the Magisterium and discusses the development of the bomb with Lord Roke. They note Dr Cooper’s reluctance to cooperate with Father President MacPhail. Father Gomez interrupts MacPhail before he can touch the golden monkey, and is hit for questioning his authority. He apologises by requesting permission to track down the Serpent. Lyra attempts to engage a harpy in conversation, but without success. She begins to lead the ghosts in their escape, in search of a high enough location for the subtle knife to work, and is reunited with Lee Scoresby.
Marisa attempts to reason with Dr Cooper while she prepares the bomb and appeal to her sense of what is right. Roke attacks the guards and Dr Cooper halts the severing of Marisa and her dæmon, refusing to be part of the Magisterium’s plan. MacPhail kills her with a blow to the head. The golden monkey is freed by Roke, who is then critically injured by MacPhail. Marisa is able to overwhelm him and disarm the bomb. However, Archangel Alarbus has brought news of Lord Asriel's activities to Metatron. The angel intervenes and drops the guillotine to severe the fanatical MacPhail, who has chosen to sacrifice himself, from his dæmon Octavia.
In the land of the dead, Lyra, Will and the ghosts watch the incoming bomb.
