Nippon was a country in Lyra's world[1] located in Asia, near Sakhalin Island[2]. It was made up of a series of large and small islands.[3] A map of Nippon and Corea featured on the Globetrotter list of maps. Coram van Texel had once seen archers in Nippon wait to fire their bows at any moment, but without any nervous excitement.[4] A seal-hunter at the Samirsky Hotel suggested that John Parry's Tartar name could be Nipponese.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- Nippon is the name of Japan in Japanese.[6]
- Nippon could be ruled by an Emperor like Japan.
- Since Coram van Texel saw archers here, Nippon could be a feudal society, similar in structure to mediaeval Japan.
