A night-ghast was a being that came out at night in Lyra's world. Malcolm Polstead thought that the shadow he could see that darted out of his vision when he looked at it could have been a night-ghast except that it wasn't dark.[1]

Lyra Silvertongue was visited by three night-ghasts in her room at Jordan College during the night after switching some of the coins representing a scholar's dæmon (which were placed inside each of the scholars' skulls) in the catacombs of the college. The figures had bony fingers, which they pointed at Lyra, before pulling off their cowls to show bleeding stumps where their heads had been. Pantalaimon, as a lion, had to roar at them until they retreated into the wall.[2]
