Miriam Jacobs's father was a man from Lyra's world who owned a rose business. After a lot of the rose gardens in Asia were destroyed, it became increasingly difficult to source roses and so Miriam's father went to Latakia to speak with various suppliers to no avail. He soon went bankerupt and had to sell the house. He sent a letter to his daughter explaining what had happened which, upon reading, she began to weep.[1]
