Why did you remove Lee's age? It's only logical that he is 59 or possibly 60, just going by mathematics. Lyra's birth year and age, the date Lee met Iorek and his age at the time. That should comes out to 59-60.
EDIT: Nevermind, I've seen the argument over the year being 1962.
EDIT 2: I FOUND THE AGE BIT! Last page of Once Upon a Time in the North: "He'd learned his lesson; he looked after it well for the rest of his life, and thirty-five years later, the Winchester was in his hands when he died." This line directly states that Lee Scoresby died 35 years after the events of the short story. 24+35=59.
Yeah, the dates in Lyra's world are really annoying and it's something I'll probably look around to cleaning up on the wiki in the new year :P...perhaps we'll get a solid date in the next book. Thanks for asking anyway and for being on the wiki so long!
Thanks for correcting that for me - I missed it when I altered the link to contain the whole word. I've just tweaked it again; I've noticed a lot of plurals links don't have the "s" included as part of the link in the editor. Just in case you didn't know, you can sourcecode it like so: [[Spectre|Spectres]] to show the plural without the link being broken :) You can also do it in the normal editor by writing the whole word and then changing the hyperlink text, but I'm guessing you know that bit :D

Hey NightSpeakers! I noticed that an anonymous user recently changed some of the infoboxes from adaption to adaptation. I notice both words are used throughout the wiki. I think we should come to a consensus on which one to use, then it'd be awesome if you could use your bot to correct all mentions of the word to the agreed upon version. Any preference on which one we use? I'm personally more used to the word adaptation but perhaps adaption is the more common use in England?
On that topic, it might be best to switch the order we put them in on infoboxes so the TV adaptation always comes first, before the film, seeing as we have a lot more TV images now & it's what most people are looking for. Also, do you still disagree on adding the actors to the bottom of the infoboxes - Mandy's said it'd be a good idea...and people will definitely be searching for that info now! Happy thanksgiving btw!
I'm still pretty content having the film adaptation come first for those characters that do appear in both, just because the film adaptation seems to have cast closer to the books' descriptions of the characters. If you feel really strongly about it, we can ask fellow admins to break up the tie (I'm cool going with whatever consensus). And yes, I'm totally cool with adding the actors to the bottom of the infoboxes! Did you want me to look into implementing that? Or did Mandy already offer to do so?
My problem is fewer people will recognise them in categories and on search pages. When clicking on the navigation bar at the top and having a quick glance at the page, not finding the image related to the TV series first could turn people away from the page as they don't recognise the name. Especially seeing as our wordmark, header background and the main wiki background are all about the series, I think it would make sense to let the TV series first. Of course, it's not huge :) but I think we should consider relaxing media from the film and start making sure we show new readers the much better series. Another admin's opinion would be nice and I'd be happy to follow either away too!
I believe we had a brief discussion of it on the infobox talk page - Mandy backed it on the design thread although I think it's something we should do (especially after all she's done with the theme) - perhaps it would be best to add this with the adaption image switch around, should we decide to do that. :)
Okay, I guess I can relax my opinion on the TV series images. If you'd like to make the switch, I'll back the decision! You're right about the whole recognizing character images bit haha. Can your bot do that or would we need to go around manually doing it?
Thanks! Definitely something we'd need to do manually (though I might simply log into my bot account, whilst editing manually, so the edits doesn't appear in recentchanges). Special:TagsReport can help identify the pages with galleries too.
Hey, just so you know, I've already given Mandy my permission to update the wordmark/theme and background of the wiki, just waiting on your word! Also, for the main page, do you think we should perhaps make the spoiler warning a bit more prominent to people new to the wiki? OR is it pretty self-explanatory? Also, the countdowns for the episodes.. are those going to be there 24/7 until all the episodes have aired? I just don't think they're the prettiest countdowns. Maybe we could design a better template for them :) I'll work on a prototype
Yep - I'm definitely behind it! Hopefully that & the URL will be updated for tonight! For the warning, how were you thinking of making it more noticeable? Moving position? Adding an outline? I'd probably agree to moving it somewhere else as, for logged-out users, an ad covers the right column, pushing down the text so I agree on that. The countdowns will be there 24/7 (and will probably be used again next year and for TBoD3) and they definitely need a touch-up!

Hi! Thanks for getting in touch! This is definitely something we need (and I'm sure the other admins agree). I discussed this 2+ months ago with out WM, Idekmandy, and she's promised to do a full design make-over (theme, wordmark, home page and more) before the series premieres - see here - but I'm not sure if she's even started a test wiki yet. I've jotted down quite a few ideas on that thread that might give you some more ideas - although we already have a social media space, perhaps you're thinking of making it more prominent?
I'm definitely behind it, however, it would probably be better if you talked to Mandy about it (she might have a few ideas to contribute, she might have already fully designed it or might be planning to do it herself, not wanting to have to undo your edits - no matter how minor - that you've spent precious time on when she gets round to designing the wiki)!
P.S. I've got a few concerns/requests about other things on FANDOM to do with the TV series. I'm not sure if you'll be able to do anything about them, but perhaps you'll be able to speak to someone who can:
On the FANDOM main page, HDM is listed however the image is quite boring, definitely not eye-catching and something the ordinary viewer will probably skip across. Also, the character, Lee Scoresby (who is the character in that photo), won't appear until at least episode 4. The photo was added a few months ago and there's been two posters that have been released since then which include a lot more of the characters and are much more eye-catching. Perhaps you'll be able to change them? Posters: here and here
I emailed staff about this over a month ago but there hasn't been any change and I doubt there will be in the next six days. The picture for the wiki on the app is of the main character, Lyra, from the 2007 film which very few people will be looking for and not very many will even recognise. Perhaps you'll be able to update this photo to one of Dafne Keen, the new Lyra, or even this one of Iorek, one of the fan-favourites.
This is out of interest, have you been able to give official wiki status to any wikis related to BBC shows (or, even more likely, HBO shows). It would be great to become an official wiki but I'd like to know if it's happened before with similar wikis.
When searching up the HDM wiki on other wikis, on the side of the serach results, below the wiki's image, there's a description of the wiki has no mention of the TV series. I can't see anyway to change this text - can you help with that?
Thanks for asking around! Although, I am a bit confused by this - for 4, the text on the mobile main page was updated sometime in January so I can't imagine it's a caching issue. As for 2, I can't see an option on it anywhere on the mobile main page - the wiki was added to the FANDOM app around Autumn last year and I think the app team must have made the image (they've cut the background from an image of Lyra) and I'm pretty certain none of the admins back then did it, the image doesn't appear at all on Special:Images or on the mobile main page!

Also talked to her about the main page-- she gave me the go ahead to make a few edits. I'll try to update them today. Once I do, I welcome any and all feedback so if you want anything changed or added definitely let me know!
OK I made a few updates to the main page :) Let me know what you think! Any sections you would like added? I kept it pretty much the same except for a new video section, new headers, and a bit more organization.
One thought is for the slider- there are two video links in there but now that there is a video section, perhaps there is another part of the wiki you'd like to highlight?
Love it! Thanks so much - the headers are definitely better and I really like the new boxes around the images <3! A couple of queries:
The footer - we removed recently the literature footer from the wiki as it seems that those programs have been retired and are no longer updated (although perhaps they are being revived?). If that is something that should stay, could you fix the link from 'Want your community included? See how.' - the link is broken which doesn't look good on the home page - it goes to the entertainment wiki rather than the television wiki!
Videos - is it necessary to include the description that they have on Youtube on the videos (with lots of links to other sites and some characters that make the page look weird, like hashtags) or can I revert those to the smaller description that sometimes provides a better description of the file?
Mobile - is there any way that it can be optimised for mobile? When using the mercury skin, the bottom part (Twitter, Poll, Discussions and TV footer) don't really work.

The footer- you make a good point, I think they are edited at the discretion of staff. I deleted the outdated links. If this is something you don't think is necessary, I can absolutely delete it! just let me know :)
Videos- unfortunately the wiki automatically pulls the title of the videos and puts them below the video (perhaps there is code to delete this but I"m not sure how). However- you can change the file name by clicking on the video and clicking "rename". Then whatever you name it as will show up. Let me know if you need help with this part.
Mobile-- the main page can only be edited for mobile by admins, so unfortunately I don't have access even with some staff rights! Here is a help page for editing or if it seems confusing, maybe I can walk you through it.
For this, I think I probably should update the mobile main page. But here, when you click 'view more' and scroll down, it doesn't look very neat - is there any way to hide some of those templates/clean them up?

The view more section pulls automatically from the main page slider- so you could either change the slider, or perhaps there is another way to edit the mobile main page? I can't see the editing section to check it out unfortunately because I don't have the admin rights!

I assume the new topic has something to do with meetings between users to discuss the wiki xD - although we all edit around the clock so it might be a bit tricky to implement although I think it's definitely something we should try!
Done! Something I've been meaning to tell you for a while now: FANDOM actually put HDM in a spotlight on their front page a few months ago under Television (which we must have missed). They had actually used this image from the film so I alerted them a month or so ago to change it (and suggested the image of Iorek in his armour). However, staff didn't listen and chose that (reasonable) image of Lee which is what there is now - but at least we're on the home page!
I've also alerted them about changing the image used on the app (currently it's Dakota) although this hasn't been updated yet.
I've been looking over our protection policy recently and I think there are a few issues with it. Firstly, the sky blue lock should completely go - it's meant to go on pages that can't be created. However, if the page hasn't been created, there's no way we can put it on the page! The move protected might also want to go because we're unlikely to use it (there are a few pages that are, quite rightly, move protected). It should be pretty obvious we've stopped the page from being moved and is something most readers won't be interested in.

I've found myself caught up in work lately and I'm realizing that my work around the wiki has definitely been slacking. I am definitely going to need help in the next few months with everything that will be happening regarding His Dark Materials (tv and book releases). Please don't feel pressured. Only accept this invitation if you have the time to dedicate to the wiki and if it's something that interests you :) And feel free to ask any/all the questions you want before giving me an answer.
Oh wow! Thanks so much for the offer! Will ArgentFir/evilquoll have any input in this before promotion? Very tempting to just accept on the spot but I think I have a question or two first:
If both Lime and I accept, what would be doing for a user in the future who wants to gain adminship (assuming none of us 'retire')? Would we consider giving moderator rights if the wiki gets popular or even have more than 5 admins?
What kind of thing would have to be discussed in His Dark Materials:Administrative Discussions? I assume that would be things like if the wiki theme/navigation were to be majorly changed, or adding actor pages on the wiki, enabling achievements (I'm not planning on those last two things, just examples!) but would minor things be discussed there too? And if we were to go with some of Idekmandy's suggestions, would this be something that all admins should be discussing?
Are we still adding the welcome template to new users' Message Walls, would that be something I might need to do in the future?
I'm not all the fussed about bureaucrat rights, nothing I would need to do would involve having bureaucrat status, but would (say in a year/few months/when an admin leaves the wiki) Lime and I be granted bureaucrat rights?
Finally, would it be possible to give my bot to content moderator rights? This would allow me to mass protect/delete/move pages (in extreme cases) but also allow the bot to edit various fully protected pages!
So, ArgentFir and evilquoll are welcome to comment (I will reach out to them on their talk pages shortly), but I very much doubt they will object in having more help around the wiki. I'll be promoting as soon as you and/or LimeInABush accept because it's in the best interest of the wiki to get more admins as soon as possible.
1. Any future admins will need to go through a process which we can all discuss at a more convenient time. The reason I'm offering this position to you now is for the wiki's sake. Anyone in the future will likely become moderators before being considered for adminship (if you'd prefer to be a moderator rather than an admin, I can do that too :P )
2. That page was created mainly for major discussions, any minor decisions can probably be discussed via our respective message walls. So if you want another admin's advice/help with an issue, just post on their message wall. If it's something major, post on the AD page.
3. Yes, this is something I actively try to do and would hope future admins can help with. How I'd like it to go in the future with more admins is that whoever posts the welcome message on a new user's page should generally keep an eye on that user and provide any help/advice that they might need.
4. This is definitely something that can be considered in the future. Adminship is a step in the right direction for any future bureaucrat desires.
5. As of now, we haven't needed a bot to do anything that major (yet), but if that need should arise, we can talk about giving the bot updated rights.
Thanks for even considering this position. One thing I will ask for if you accept the position is that you read through all of our policies (just to refresh your mind) and bring to my attention anything that might be a cause for concern or any updated policy ideas. Other than that, I'll trust you to start using your admin rights to improve the wiki.

And just another one: what kind of post should be put into the announcements category on Discussions?

I am certainly in favour of extending adminship to both NightSpeakers and LimeInABush, particularly given the considerable work they have done to improve the wiki since joining. I know that the limited time I can dedicate is unfortunately unlikely to change for the forseeable, so having capable hands ready to deal with the exciting times ahead is very welcome.
