  • Hi again! Wanted to make sure you saw this. There's a His Dark Materials virtual panel scheduled for SDCC that anyone is free to watch live this Thursday at 1:00pm PT. It might (hopefully!) reveal some fun stuff about the series. Do you think you'll catch it?

    • Haha yes :P so relaxed and fun shame it's only half and hour!

        Loading editor
    • I noticed that too, it's on the shorter side! The other panels I've checked are generally a full hour, one was longer. But it's also a generally better panel than the others, in terms of content and pacing. I actually wonder if it's slightly edited for tighter pacing? That could account for the shorter time of it.

  • Hello! I'm Kylara, and I'll be taking over as your @fandom Wiki Manager, since Mandy has been promoted to Community Manager. Just like Mandy, I'm here to help, so feel free to reach out and let me know if you have any questions!

I'm here to check in to see how things are going, and I want to make sure that you catch these important Fandom updates.

The Unified Community Platform (UCP) is coming this year, which means that all Fandom Wikis will be getting some much-needed renovations (and new features!) as we move to an upgraded version of MediaWiki. Check out the Staff blog post UCP: The Vision, Purpose, and Process for information on the roll out plan, which will come out this year in stages.

The first stage has already begun with new wikis being created on the UCP. You can also check out some of the updates to profiles and message walls on the UCP. To stay up to date with these changes, you can keep an eye on the staff blogs on Community Central.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment on those blog posts or let me know!

    • Thanks! So I pretty much did just that for now. The CSS has kicked in, so you should see that the infoboxes have better spacing. For the top of the main page, I took the summary from the first novel's back cover, then added an image up there, removed the slider, and the books are now arranged in a single gallery without tabs. Nothing drastic, but good for SEO and I hope you like it!

  • Why did you remove Lee's age? It's only logical that he is 59 or possibly 60, just going by mathematics. Lyra's birth year and age, the date Lee met Iorek and his age at the time. That should comes out to 59-60.

EDIT: Nevermind, I've seen the argument over the year being 1962.

EDIT 2: I FOUND THE AGE BIT! Last page of Once Upon a Time in the North:  "He'd learned his lesson; he looked after it well for the rest of his life, and thirty-five years later, the Winchester was in his hands when he died." This line directly states that Lee Scoresby died 35 years after the events of the short story. 24+35=59.

      Loading editor
    • Yeah, the dates in Lyra's world are really annoying and it's something I'll probably look around to cleaning up on the wiki in the new year :P...perhaps we'll get a solid date in the next book. Thanks for asking anyway and for being on the wiki so long!

    • Night, please see the edit of my post. I found the bit about his age. It says he died 35 years after the events of the short story.

        Loading editor
    • Ahah! Thanks for that :) - I've put around 59 seeing as the thirty five years could be thirty five years and a few months and could have gone past his birthday. Thanks again!

  • Thanks for correcting that for me - I missed it when I altered the link to contain the whole word. I've just tweaked it again; I've noticed a lot of plurals links don't have the "s" included as part of the link in the editor. Just in case you didn't know, you can sourcecode it like so: [[Spectre|Spectres]] to show the plural without the link being broken :) You can also do it in the normal editor by writing the whole word and then changing the hyperlink text, but I'm guessing you know that bit :D Thanks again! And yeah... I feel you on the recent election -_-

      Loading editor
    • No problem :P. Oh, I didn't know it broke the link - does it? We use a lot of Spectres generally because it's simpler (and it's in our policy), Spectres (Spectres) does seem to work for me.

Don't let me rant on about it...I haven't felt right since Thursday. :/ Brexit's going to be horrible...

  • Hey NightSpeakers! I noticed that an anonymous user recently changed some of the infoboxes from adaption to adaptation. I notice both words are used throughout the wiki. I think we should come to a consensus on which one to use, then it'd be awesome if you could use your bot to correct all mentions of the word to the agreed upon version. Any preference on which one we use? I'm personally more used to the word adaptation but perhaps adaption is the more common use in England?

    • Okay, I guess I can relax my opinion on the TV series images. If you'd like to make the switch, I'll back the decision! You're right about the whole recognizing character images bit haha. Can your bot do that or would we need to go around manually doing it?

        Loading editor
    • Thanks! Definitely something we'd need to do manually (though I might simply log into my bot account, whilst editing manually, so the edits doesn't appear in recentchanges). Special:TagsReport can help identify the pages with galleries too.

  • Hey, just so you know, I've already given Mandy my permission to update the wordmark/theme and background of the wiki, just waiting on your word! Also, for the main page, do you think we should perhaps make the spoiler warning a bit more prominent to people new to the wiki? OR is it pretty self-explanatory? Also, the countdowns for the episodes.. are those going to be there 24/7 until all the episodes have aired? I just don't think they're the prettiest countdowns. Maybe we could design a better template for them :) I'll work on a prototype

      Loading editor
    • Yep - I'm definitely behind it! Hopefully that & the URL will be updated for tonight! For the warning, how were you thinking of making it more noticeable? Moving position? Adding an outline? I'd probably agree to moving it somewhere else as, for logged-out users, an ad covers the right column, pushing down the text so I agree on that. The countdowns will be there 24/7 (and will probably be used again next year and for TBoD3) and they definitely need a touch-up!

Also, happy watching for tonight! I hope you enjoy it :)

    • Just seen the WAM score too! Our highest ever by quite a few! Let's hope that continues to rise over the next few weeks!

    • And have you seen Special:Analytics!!!!!! 8 000 to 54 000.....wow!

        Loading editor
    • Oh wow that's a huge jump! And I'm so excited to watch tonight! I've been watching trailers and cast interviews all day hoping to make the time go faster T^T

For the warning I'm thinking a notice template might work (maybe put it above the countdowns), but IDK how to make the countdowns look prettier at this time

  • Hi there! How are you? I'm part of the FANDOM staff, and in preparation for the upcoming HDM series, I was wondering if you would mind if I made a few minor main page updates? Just adding a video section, maybe some new headers, a social media section, or anything else you'd have in mind!

Let me know what you think or if you prefer it as is! Thanks!

    • Thanks for the quick reply!

      1. It might be for the best seeing as quite a few of those wikis are small and inactive as well as a few not having the footer on them at all. It might be better to replace it with another section...
      2. Oops! I didn't explain properly although thanks for reminding me of that - I'd forgotten! I meant the actual file page (File:Everything you need to know about His Dark Materials - BBC, for example) - can we revert it back to a smaller description with less links?
      3. For this, I think I probably should update the mobile main page. But here, when you click 'view more' and scroll down, it doesn't look very neat - is there any way to hide some of those templates/clean them up?

      Thanks!

        Loading editor
    • Hi!

      1. No problem, just deleted - if another section comes to mind let me know!
      2. Ahh I see now- I just fixed the description.
      3. The view more section pulls automatically from the main page slider- so you could either change the slider, or perhaps there is another way to edit the mobile main page? I can't see the editing section to check it out unfortunately because I don't have the admin rights!

  • Do you agree it's about time we get rid of the LBS Spoiler template?

      Loading editor
    • Also, I replied to your idea on the Admin discussions page. I'm actually going to add a topic there shortly so please keep an eye out for that :)

        Loading editor
    • Yes, definitely. I'll start that shortly! Thanks - I'll take a look at that now! I assume the new topic has something to do with meetings between users to discuss the wiki xD - although we all edit around the clock so it might be a bit tricky to implement although I think it's definitely something we should try!

    • Done! Something I've been meaning to tell you for a while now: FANDOM actually put HDM in a spotlight on their front page a few months ago under Television (which we must have missed). They had actually used this image from the film so I alerted them a month or so ago to change it (and suggested the image of Iorek in his armour). However, staff didn't listen and chose that (reasonable) image of Lee which is what there is now - but at least we're on the home page!

I've also alerted them about changing the image used on the app (currently it's Dakota) although this hasn't been updated yet.

    • I've been looking over our protection policy recently and I think there are a few issues with it. Firstly, the sky blue lock should completely go - it's meant to go on pages that can't be created. However, if the page hasn't been created, there's no way we can put it on the page! The move protected might also want to go because we're unlikely to use it (there are a few pages that are, quite rightly, move protected). It should be pretty obvious we've stopped the page from being moved and is something most readers won't be interested in.
