The Malá Strana, known colloquially as the old city, was a residential area across the river Vltava from Prague. Vaclav Kubiček lived there and it was home to a street called Zlatá ulička where it was said that alchemists made gold.[1]
The houses in the city were notably old and crowded together, and there were a number of narrow streets and alleys between them. Behind the houses stood a castle.[1]
