Lyra and Her Death is the fourth episode in the third series of the TV series. It was released on 12 December 2022 in the U.S. and will be released on 8 January 2023 in the U.K.
Synopsis[]
Lyra and Will travel to a dangerous place from which no one has ever returned. Mrs. Coulter tries to thwart the Magisterium's deadly plan.
Plot[]
Lyra and Will arrive in the world of the dead. They follow files of people waiting to be processed. Instructed to go between holding areas, they are told they must wait to die before being allowed to move on.
Lyra meets her Death. Will is unable to see her, and both he and Pan are unsure about her unwavering resolve to find Roger. Lyra’s Death warns her that there is no way out of the land of the dead but agrees to lead her forward anyway.
Meanwhile, Mrs Coulter arrives in Geneva. She uses her domineering ways to secure an audience with Father President MacPhail and claims to have deliberately destroyed the subtle knife. She argues that focus ought to be on the Serpent who will tempt Lyra and pledges her loyalty to the Magisterium having described Lord Asriel’s torturing of the Archangel Alarbus.
Mrs Coulter discovers the presence of Asriel’s Gallivespian agent Lord Roke and they resolve to work together. Roke finds that Dr Cooper is working on a bomb, which is guided to its target by a lock of Lyra’s hair, taken by Father Gomez from Mrs Coulter's locket. Mrs Coulter is able to burn the hair Roke recovers but is captured before they can escape. MacPhail reveals that some of Lyra’s hair still remains and that severing Marisa from her dæmon will provide the necessary energy to power the bomb.
Lyra and Will arrive at the jetty and learn that Pan cannot join them. Lyra pleads with the boatman to no avail. She screams as the boat moves across the water, leaving Pan behind. Pan is heartbroken that Lyra would choose Roger over him.
After days of travel in another world, Mary awakes to find that a strange creature has brought her food. She hurries to follow it, failing to collect all of her belongings.
