Plot

"This story starts in another world. One that is both like, and unlike, your own. Here, every human soul takes the physical form of an animal, known as a dæmon. The relationship between human and dæmon is sacred. This world has been controlled for centuries by the all-powerful Magisterium. Except in the Northern wilderness, where witches secretly whisper of a prophecy. A prophecy about a child with a great destiny. During the great flood, this child was brought to Oxford."
—Text at the beginning of the episode[src]

The episode begins with Lord Asriel taking the baby Lyra Belacqua to Jordan College during the floods, scenes taken from La Belle Sauvage. Asriel flies his gyropter through the streets of Oxford before wading through the water to get to Jordan and give Lyra the protection of scholastic sanctuary.

Twelve years later, during a lesson with Charles, Lyra escapes and flees to the Retiring Room where she watches as Dr Carne poisons a bottle of Tokay for her uncle, Asriel. When Asriel goes to drink the Tokay, Lyra jumps through the window and knocks it out his hand. After telling him what she was, Asriel tells her to hide and spy on the Master especially when the word 'Dust' is mentioned.

Asriel takes Lyra to her bedroom after she falls asleep, putting her in bed. In the morning, Lyra's friend Roger Parslow tells her news of Billy Costa, a gyptian, who has been kidnapped by the Gobblers and also that the gyptian, Billy Costa, has gone missing, taken by the Gobblers. Lyra runs to Asriel after she hears from Roger that he's leaving. Asriel rejects her offer to go to the North with him and pushes her out f the zeppelin.

When Marisa Coulter arrives that evening, Lyra takes her opportunity to go to the North with her and persuades her to invite Roger to come with her. During this time, Roger is taken by the Gobblers. The following morning, Lyra goes looking for Roger to tell him the news but none of the kitchen staff had seen him. She tells Marisa who replies and says that they will go to London and find him.

Lyra and Marisa fly to London in the zeppelin and see the gyptians move too. The Magisterium, meanwhile, catches news of Asriel's plan to go the North for a second time to continue his research and want to find him and find out what he knows.[4]
