Lascars were a people of Lyra's world. They were from Asia or possibly North Africa.[1] Both Tony Makarios and his mother had Lascar ancestry.[2]

Behind the scenesEdit

  • Lascar derives from the Persian lashkar, a word meaning camp or army. Lascars were non-European sailors or militiamen who served on European ships during the colonial era. The term most often referred to those from the Indian Subcontient or Southeast Asia, although it was sometimes used to describe those of other non-European backgrounds (including those from the Arab world).

Notes and referencesEdit

  1. Given the consistent parallels between Will's world and Lyra's, it is most likely that Lascars were from the Indian Subcontinent or else another background known to be linked to the term in our world.
