The Jordan silver was used by Jordan College for important dinners and other occasions. It consisted of many dishes, bowls, plates and goblets. As the college Steward, Mr Cawston was in charge of the silver. He considered it to be priceless and irreplaceable.
Lyra Silvertongue had a tradition of earning a few guineas by helping to polish the silver before the Founder's Feast. She used a damp cloth and a large tin of Redvers' powder. She took a particular interest in the biggest dish, a shallow platter with a bowl-shaped depression in the centre. This was one of four rosewater dishes, carried between the meat and dessert courses, to allow students and guests to rinse their fingers. It was 340 years old, as thick as guineas and two feet across. However, its future use was jeopardised by the shortage of roses in the Levant.[1]
