John Parry's mother was a seemingly-elderly woman from Will's world. When Will Parry was six years old, he visited his grandparents' large house with his mother, Elaine Parry. They gave them a cold welcome and left Elaine in tears, John's mother giving her a look of contempt. Will hated people who treated his mother like that and, wanting to kill them, he tried to make sure his mother was never faced with that brutality again. He didn't realise they were his grandparents until he was older.[1]

- In the TV series, she is named as Annabel Parry (and her husband as Graham) and is played by Jane How. Will meets his grandparents at their house in Oxford when he and Lyra Silvertongue travel from Cittàgazze but is forced to make an escape when Graham calls Inspector Walters.[2]
