Father Jerome Burnaby was the priest in charge at the Holy Chapel of Saint Phanourious in Seleukeia. He was English and sounded like he came originally from Yorkshire. His dæmon was a robin.[1]
Biography[]
Jerome was watering the flowers in his garden when he met Lyra Silvertongue. He gave her water and said he'd give her address of good doctor. Lyra used the pseudonym Tatiana Prokovskaya with him. He seemed to have an interest in philosophy based on his reading and he had books strewn all over one room of his house. Jerome advised her against going to the Blue Hotel, telling her he believed it to have evil powers not of this world, and that it was shrouded in rumour and mystery.
He told Lyra that the Authority never wished for dæmon to be severed from their humans and that he struggled to come to terms with the sort of things people came to him with given his role as a priest. The Magisterium denied what was going on and his bishop gave him no guidance.
Jerome struggled with himself before telling Lyra about the dæmon trade in the city. He implored her not to got to the Blue Hotel, recounting how one parishioner of his went out of curiosity and came back marked, changed and diminished. Before she left, he directed Lyra to the sale of dæmons taking place at the Park Hotel.[1]
Physical appearance[]
Jerome was older than he first appeared. His build was burly and he was red-faced. His face showed shrewd concern when he met an injured Lyra. He dressed in a faded shirt and trousers.[1]
