An honorific (sometimes in British English given the non-standard spelling "honourific") is a polite title that is given before a person's name. They include "Dr", "Mr", "Sir", "Esquire", "Lord", "Count", "Chevalier", "Mrs", "Miss", "Countess", "Dame" and "Lady".

- The use in Lyra's world of the title "Count" is one of the many differences between Lyra's world and ours. In our world, although most English-language aristocratic titles are French, one exception is that instead of the French "Count" we use the German "Earl".
