The holding area was a shanty town situated in the suburbs of the land of the dead in which living people waited until their deaths took them to the land of the dead - when they were dead and became ghosts - after entering the world of the dead by accident. Lyra Silvertongue and Will Parry went there with the Gallivespians Chevalier Tialys and Lady Salmakia when trying to reach the land of the dead.[1]

The town consisted of many shabby huts which had been patched and repaired multiple times with muddy alleyways and electrical cables. The light came from a few naked light bulbs but most emanated from fires in the huts.[1]
