Grandfather (as the younger cliff-ghasts called him) was the oldest of all cliff-ghasts and was blind. He was older than humans though not nearly as old as the Authority. When coming back from the basalt fortress, Ruta Skadi was blown by a great wind into some mountains where she stumbled upon the home of this cliff-ghast. She heard him talk about the upcoming war between Lord Asriel and the Authority as well as hearing that Asriel wouldn't win without Æsahættr, however, some younger cliff-ghasts saw her and chased her away, keeping chase until she rejoined Serafina Pekkala and the other witches in the world of Cittàgazze.[1]
