Gottfried Brande was a German author who lived in Wittenberg in Lyra's world. Brande once wrote a huge novel, called The Hyperchorasmians, that encouraged readers to think rationally which became huge around Europe. Pantalaimon visited him after his book was published and told him that he was taking away his human's imagination.[2]

Brande's dæmon Cosima
Brande's adopted dæmon was named Cosima, and she took the form of a German shepherd dog. She was notably large and appeared to wish that she didn't exist, likely due to her human's disbelief in dæmons.[3]
