English was a language spoken in Brytain, as well as by people in other regions of Lyra's world. When Lyra Belacqua was captured by Samoyed hunters, they tried speaking several languages to her before realising she spoke English.[1] Anthony Hassall's passport, issued by the Ottoman Empire, was written in English along with several other languages.[2] English was also a language spoken in Will's world and the world of Cittàgazze.[3]
