Dr Strauss was a man from Lyra's world. His dæmon was named Cariad. In September, Strauss and Anthony Hassall set off for the botanical research station in Asia. Whilst travelling, Strauss kept a journal of what had happened. Once they reached the station, Strauss agreed to enter with his dæmon. Anthony returned, taking a selection of Strauss's journal, in the hope of returning the papers to the Botanic Garden.[1]
