Coal-silk was a synthetic fibre in Lyra's world. The staff and children at Bolvangar were given synthetic coal-silk furs to wear in the cold, but they were not as warm as real fur, even when they were stuffed with coal-silk fibres. They were also used as shower curtains in the North.[1] The tarpaulin on La Belle Sauvage was made of coal-silk.[2]
