Coal silk was a synthetic fibre in Lyra's world. The staff and children at Bolvangar were given synthetic coalsilk furs to wear in the cold, but they were not as warm as real fur even when they were stuffed with coalsilk fibres. They were also used as shower curtains in the North.[1] The tarpaulin on La Belle Sauvage was made of coalsilk.[2]
