The Authority is the name of an angel, the first angel, formed out of Dust and the primary antagonist of His Dark Materials. He declares to other angels that he is the creator, and many believe that the Authority is God. The Authority has delegated substantial part of his power to Metatron, functioning as his regent. He is harassed by cliff ghasts in The Amber Spyglass, and it's debatable whether this, combined with his colossal age, may have been the cause of his death.
