The Authority is the name of an angel, the first angel, formed out of Dust and the primary antagonist of His Dark Materials, though he made his first full appearance in The Amber Spyglass. He declares to other angels that he is the creator, and many believe that the Authority is God. However, Xaphania and the other rebel angels found out the truth and were banished from the Kingdom of Heaven. The Authority has delegated substantial part of his power to Metatron, functioning as his regent. However, Metatron, who grew too powerful, betrayed the Authority, and trapped him in the crystal box, which keeps the Authority alive. He is harassed by cliff ghasts in The Amber Spyglass, and it's debatable whether this, combined with his colossal age, may have been the cause of his death after Lyra and Will freed him from the crystal box with the subtle knife. In the end, he finds death as a happy, peaceful one, and joined with the other ghosts in the cosmos.

Pullman portrayed the Authority as extremely aged, fragile, kind, and naive. This naivete may probably be one of the reasons that he believes that he is the original Creator. It may also have made him suseptible to being imprisoned by his traitorous regent Metatron.
