The Aurora above a mountain

The Aurora was a phenomenon caused by storms of charged particles and solar rays interacting with the atmosphere.[1] Marisa Coulter spent 3 months observing the Aurora on one of her expeditions to the North.[2] The charged particles in the Aurora make the matter in one world thin, allowing one to see through it to other worlds.[3]

The Aurora was also mentioned when Lord Asriel was speaking to the scholars about Dust.
