Welcome to the discussion for the new book in The Book of Dust trilogy: The Secret Commonwealth. This megathread is for discussion for the run-up to the release and for discussing the book when it comes out. Feel free to make your own posts if you think the topic could start a good discussion, however, short, one-line thoughts that you want to share should be posted here!
Beaware of SPOILERS on this thread for the book - read with caution! Happy reading!
Hey everyone, as you might have seen from my original post, I'm planning to do a re-reading of the original trilogy (and more) before the release of The Secret Commonwealth on Thursday, 3rd October this year (oooooh). During the short, short time there is between TSC being released and the TV series coming out, most editing will be based on the 2nd Book of Dust so this re-reading will be before the release of the book - though it won't be too far before the TV series.
Now, depending on the amount of users (if any, except me) who are willing to take part, this can also include an official Discussions post for talk relating to the chapter. Otherwise, it will just include a few/one user(s) adding info/pages related to the chapter they've read or are reading.
So, here are the details:
The re-reading of the books should cover everything: Northern Lights through to La Belle Sauvage and even Lyra's Oxford, The Collectors and Once Upon a Time in the North.
I plan to read the books in the order they are in, in the timeline, that is: OTN, The Collectors, LBS, NL, TSK, TAS and then LO before the release of TSC.
LBS and the original trilogy have 101 chapters altogether, OTN has (including extra pages) 101 pages - this should be split over 3 days, LO and The Collectors can have a day each. That makes 106 days for the event: Wednesday, 19th June 2019 - Wednesday, 2nd October. Here's the breakdown:
*Once Upon a Time in the North: Wednesday, 19th June - Friday, 21st June
*The Collectors: Saturday, 22nd June
*La Belle Sauvage: Sunday, 23rd June - Wednesday, 17th July
*Northern Lights: Thursday, 18th July - Friday, 9th August
*The Subtle Knife: Saturday, 10th August - Saturday 24th August
*The Amber Spyglass: Sunday 25th August - Tuesday, 1st October
*Lyra's Oxford - Wednesday, 2nd October
Each day, we'll read one chapter from the books. Lyra's Oxford and The Collectors will take a day each (this includes both the story and any extras in LO). As for Once Upon a Time in the North, it will be:
*Pages 1-34: Wednesday, 19th June
*Pages 35-70: Thursday, 20th June
*Pages 71-96 (and any extra pages): Friday, 21st June
If you'd like to take part, please do leave a comment below - it doesn't matter if you can't do all the dates or don't have all the books - if you only want to do it from the 18th July - 1st October (the original trilogy), or want to read LBS and the trilogy, that's ok!
As for time zones, they don't matter - do whatever chapter/book it is on the day it is where you are.
Thanks for taking the time to read all this - if you have any questions, feel free to post them and I'll try to get back as quickly as I can!
What do you think is going to happen in TSC? What characters do you think will be re-introduced? Do you think it will be better than La Belle Sauvage - or even the main series? And most importantly - what do you think Lyra and Pan will be like in the book?
I personally can't wait for it - especially the murder mystery part and the town full of dæmons - that's going to be interesting. It's nearly 800 pages long, but I think the plot sounds better the LBS - the original trilogy will be hard to beat.
As for characters - Dr Carne will be in it, so will Malcolm and his growing up at Jordan. Maybe we'll get a glimpse of Iorek or the witches....
I can't wait to see what this grown up Lyra is like! It'll be interesting to see how she has changed since the series - what traits she still has and what she has left behind. And what about her alethiometer skills?
