I´m not particularly pleased. The actress who´ll play Lyra just doesn´t look like her and Mrs Coulter? Sorry for being rude, but she is plain. Mrs Coulter is supposed to be enchanting, she almost seduces angel! The actress is two years older than Mrs Coulter is supposed to be but looks way older.
And as much as I love Lin Manuel Miranda he´s just not Lee Scoresby. He´s way too young!
What are your thoughts?
Lyra - I agree she doesn't totally look like Lyra, she has black hair to start, and I don't think they've made her look like a savage really - and she doesn't speak with Lyra's accent (as far as I can tell from the trailers) which is one of my favourite parts about Lyra. But, I think her quality of acting is very good, she's energetic enough to be Lyra, and I think she'll be able to portray all the emotions excellently (look at the part in the latest trailer whe the golden monkey seizes Pan - she seems to be doing well there).
Marisa - 2 years definitely doesn't matter really (TV can make 10 years disappear from an adult), that shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps she doesn't look as young as she could do - but I think that'll be easy to not think about. Parts of Marisa's character seem like a young woman, others are a bit more mature, I can see Ruth Wilson portraying her well - we'll just have to wait and see...I think Ruth will be able to be seducing, sweet and calm as well as have that horrible personality! (look at the scenes in the trailer, the smirk as the golden monkey gets Pan, when she says 'some children can just....dissapear' - I get the chills at those parts).
Lee - Lee's meant to be 50(+) in Northern Lights - and in the film, Sam Elliot did amazingly well. Lin's definitely got the accent and the acting skills to play the role incredibly well and actually Lee is meant to have black hair, so that worked out fine. I can imagine him being 40, but I don't think I'll notice that much.
I think the cast will do really well - some are better than the film, some maybe not as good but I think I'll need to see the whole of series 1 before I can decide for sure. As for series 2, Amir Wilson is looking brilliant for Will Parry - I really want to see how he gets on!
I agree wholeheartedly about Lyra not looking much like a savage. I truly loved the casting of Dakota Blue Richards in the movie - she was the saving grace in the movie adaptation in my opinion. However, I am willing to give Dafne Keen a chance. It's true she doesn't look very savage in the trailer, but I'm really hoping her acting will shine through on TV rather than on a little snippet.
I also agree about Mrs Coulter. Philip Pullman changed her hair color to blond because of Nicole Kidman's performance! In my opinion, their decision to cast a brunette here feels like they're taking a step back! Also, I agree the actress isn't very "enchanting" and seductive in the trailer, but perhaps in the actual series her movements and elegance might shine.
And yes, I agree Lin Manuel is a bit too young to be playing Lee Scoresby, but I hear he's an amazing actor.
Overall, I'm not a fan of the casting because they don't stick to the characters' appearances from the books, BUT perhaps the actors themselves will be able to make up for it by portraying the personalities fantastically? I'm trying to keep my hopes up!
I don't see why they can't use wigs/dyes/lenses to make the characters look more true to their appearance in the books....if you can spend all that money on CGI, it can't cost much! I think the scenes and all the costumes, and of course the acting, will make up for that
The TV series is staying true to the books in every sense but the character's appearance it seems (and the fact the whole thing will be a bit more futuristic).
What do you think?
